Enric Granados (1867-1916), composer
Composer and pianist. Granados was born in Lleida in 1867. He was, with
Albeniz, the creator of the new catalan modern piano school. His music has
both Hispanic and Romantic flavours and we can note Grieg, Schumann and
Liszt influences. Most of Granados's published scores consist of piano and
vocal music but he has also abundant orchestra and chamber outputs.
He died when the ship he took after a recital at
the White House, given at the request of President Wilson, was torpedoed
by a German submarine in mid-Channel; Granados was picked up by a
lifeboat, but he saw his wife struggling in the sea and dived in to save her.
Both were drowned.
