Miquel Llobet (1878-1938), composer
Guitarrist and Composer. He was born in Barcelona in 1878 and studied
with M.Alegre and F.Tàrrega. Llobet
compositions, harmonisations and transcriptions were a landmark in guitar
writing, and remain a monument to his refined musicianship,
resourcefulness and understanding of the guitar's capabilities. Falla's
tribute to Debussy, Homenaje, was composed for him. Still in his
youth he was to discover radically new instrumental colours for his
instrument. Plany (1899) and El Testament
d'Amèlia (1900) are two works which exemplify these
innovations. El Mestre (1910) is a key work in the harmonic
development of guitar music. La cançó del lladre
(1927), simple but refined, is the composer's last harmonisation for guitar.
